The Partner Visa Streams allows the partner or spouse of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia.
Evidence Australian partner visa
To become a partner visa holder, the couple must demonstrate that they are in a committed relationship with an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen. Department of Home Affairs (DoHA) requires evidence of the following:
- Identity Documents – These should include your passport, birth certificate and other identity documents.
- Character Documents – These should include your police clearance and any conviction details.
- Evidence of Relationships – Evidence of your relationship with your partner should include relationship history and documents such as bills, mortgage or lease documents, joint bank statements, flight tickets, emails, whatsapp records, social matters that include statements from witnesses, and evidence of your commitment to each other.
- Dependent Details – If you have any dependants, you should provide details regarding them.
- Previous Relationship Details – If you have had any previous relationships, you should provide details regarding them.
Stages for Australian partner visa
You may already know, these visas have two stages: a Temporary Partner Visa, and a Permanent Partner Visa.
- The Temporary Partner Visa allows the partner of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia for a period of up to two years. To apply for this visa, you must provide evidence that you are in a genuine relationship with your partner, and meet the other requirements of the visa.
- The Permanent Partner Visa is the second stage of the Partner Visa process, and allows the partner of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia indefinitely. To apply for this visa, you must demonstrate that your relationship with your partner is ongoing, and that you meet the other requirements of the visa.
Note: couple with long standing relationship and valid evidence may get double visa grant (both temporary visa and permanent visas are granted together.
If you are considering applying for a partner visa to Australia, you should be aware of the three types available:
Partner visa – Onshore (Subclass 820/801)
The Partner Visa Onshore (Subclass 820/801) is for those who are already in Australia and married or in a de facto relationship with their partner. This visa also requires a two-stage process, with the first stage being the temporary visa. Once the two-year period has passed, the applicant can then apply for the permanent visa.

Partner visa – Offshore (Subclass 309/100)
The Partner Visa Offshore (Subclasses 309 and 100) is for those who are outside Australia. This visa requires a two-stage process, with the first stage being a temporary visa. Once the two-year period has passed, the applicant can then apply for the permanent visa.
Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300)
The Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300) allows you to enter Australia to marry your partner. This visa is usually valid for up to nine months and does not allow for any work rights.
This visa lets you come to Australia to marry your prospective spouse and then apply for a Partner visa.
